What does each configuration cost?

What does the same setup cost at cloud email security vendors?
Cloud vendors charge per mailbox per month — Hornetsecurity Plan 1 from EUR 2, Mimecast and Proofpoint Essentials EUR 3-5, Microsoft Defender for O365 P1/P2 between EUR 2 and 5. We charge per server. At medium mailbox volumes we are 30-50× cheaper.
Cloud prices based on publicly available tariffs (as of 2026): Hornetsecurity Plan 1 from EUR 2/mailbox, Plan 2 from EUR 4, Mimecast and Proofpoint Essentials typically EUR 3-5, Microsoft Defender for O365 P1 ~EUR 2 / P2 ~EUR 5 per licence. Comparison is purely cost-side — some cloud plans additionally include email encryption, archiving or disclaimer templates that MailGuard does not provide (that is the job of the mail server behind it). Cloud vendors are SaaS, MailGuard runs on your server in your data centre.

What is included in Free?
Free covers 1 domain on 1 server forever — with all 14 detection layers, sandbox detonation, external threat feeds (OpenPhish/URLhaus/PhishTank), DKIM/DMARC, audit log and GDPR tools. Not in Free: end-user quarantine portal, daily digest, white-label branding, reporting/PDF profiles and REST-API write. Cluster HA is not possible (1 server hard cap). Free is exactly right for single-domain setups where the admin manages everything from the admin UI.
How does Pro work? What do I select when ordering?
In the shop you pick two options: how many domains (10/25/50/100/250) and how many cluster nodes (1-10). The default is 25 domains + 3 nodes = EUR 89/month — the typical HA setup. Domain prices: 10/25/50/100/250 → EUR 29/69/129/229/499. Each additional node from the 2nd adds EUR 10. Above 250 domains or 10 nodes the offer becomes Custom.
How do we differ on price compared to cloud email security vendors?
Cloud vendors charge per mailbox: Hornetsecurity Plan 1 from EUR 2, Mimecast and Proofpoint Essentials EUR 3-5, Microsoft Defender for O365 P1/P2 between EUR 2 and 5. With 25 domains × 50 mailboxes (mid-market scale) you pay them EUR 2,500-6,250/month. With us Pro 25 + 3-node HA: EUR 89/month. 28-70× cheaper, depending on the cloud tier.
How does the 30-day trial work?
On first install MailGuard runs in trial mode for 30 days with the full Pro feature set — no order needed, no licence key, no contact with the licence server. On day 31 you must either activate Free (1 domain, 1 server) or buy Pro. If at that point you use more than 1 domain or more than 1 node, only Pro is possible — otherwise mail processing pauses with a banner notice.
What does a high-availability cluster cost?
Each additional node from the 2nd onwards adds EUR 10/month. Examples: 3-node HA standard on Pro 25 = EUR 89/month (69 + 20). 5-node cluster on Pro 100 = EUR 269/month (229 + 40). Maximum setup Pro 250 + 10 nodes = EUR 589/month. Even this max config is 42× cheaper than a comparable cloud setup with 12,500 mailboxes.
What happens after trial expiry if I do nothing?
Day 31 — mail processing pauses with 421 (temporary unavailable), sending mail servers retry automatically. The web UI shows a banner with the matching options for your current setup: with 1 domain + 1 node "activate Free or buy Pro", with more "only Pro possible or scale down". Configuration and quarantined mails are retained for 14 days.
Can I switch my Pro tier later?
Any time. Upgrading the domain tier or adding nodes is instant via the shop, the new licence is emailed, paste it in the setup wizard or settings — same software stack, new cap. Cluster expansion needs no data migration: a new node simply joins.
Do I need an SLA, phone support or reseller contract?
For individual requirements — response-time guarantee, phone support, on-premise perpetual licence, multi-cluster licence for resellers, or beyond 250 domains / 10 nodes — please reach us via the contact form. Custom is handled individually, not through a fixed plan.
